The NSBA World Championship Show and Breeders Championship Futurity was in full swing on Sunday with multiple arenas showing and awarding world championship titles and Breeders Championship Futurity championships.
The Ford Truck Arena saw its first Breeders Championship Futurity champions in several BCF, Color and World Show classes.
Breeders Championship Futurity Names First Champions
Mallory Menard debuted her dun gelding in the Color BCF Two Year Old Non-Pro Western Pleasure, and came out the futurity champion. “It was our maiden voyage,” Mallory said. “I felt very uncomfortable going into the class, because we struggled a little earlier in the week. But he showed great. He’s quite a ham. He’s in your pocket, and loves treats. He has plenty of personality.
Mallory noted that the dun Machine Made gelding has attracted a lot of interest. “I hope to be able to show him in Florida and at the Congress, and then do the three year old Non-Pro classes next year with him, if I still have him,” she said.
In the Color BCF Three Year Old Open Western Pleasure, Cody Conover showed Hot Without A Doubt to a Double win for Caitlyn Dunsmore-Miller, winning both the Open and Limited Open divisions of the class.
The BCF 4-6 Year Old Non-Pro Western Pleasure saw a very tough group of competitors, but JR Cook and Line Up Behind won the class. “He has been a once in a lifetime horse for my family,” JR said. “Words really can’t describe how much he means to us. This was really my first big win at the NSBA, and it’s still sinking in.
“This horse probably has a retirement home with us, because I have three daughters and at least two of them are starting to ride. It’s priceless to be able to have a horse like this for them to learn the Western Pleasure with.”
In the BCF Intermediate 4-6 Year Old Non-Pro Western Pleasure, Bill Cosentino and NothinButLazy took the win. “We bought Mia last October. She is a five year old mare by Lazy Loper and out of Anothermousenthehouse. RJ King and Blair Townsend had her in their barn.
“I had been looking for a horse, and she was right there in the barn. I just happened to be at the right place at the right time. She’s a great horse, very solid to show and I’m having a blast showing her. What a great show NSBA is having this year!”
In the Hunter Under Saddle division, Carrie Warren showed Wine After Whiskey to win the Color BCF Three Year Old Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle. “I bought Cheryl at the Arizona Sun Circuit,” Carrie said. “I had been looking for a horse, and as it turned out, she was right in Bruce (Vickery)’s barn. I couldn’t get to Texas, so I asked if he would take her to Arizona and I tried her there and loved her, and we bought her.
“She’s by Extremely Hot Chips and out of Only Ever After, and Bruce already has her going in Trail. We will be adding the All Around events from Western Riding to Horsemanship. But English is my true love, so I had to put an English saddle on her. She’s super easy.”
In the Color BCF Two Year Old Open Hunter Under Saddle, Judy Zeitler catch rode Allocated By Design for owner Kim Lindsey, whose trainer is Arturo Maestas. “Kim has been one of our customers for ten years, and winning the BCF was on her bucket list,” Arturo said.
“She bred this horse out of her daughter’s show mare, and we helped her pick out who to breed to. Bixby is an ApHC mare by Allocate Your Assets. She had never been shown until today. In fact, she just had a hunt seat saddle put on her for the first time yesterday. She is very modern, a good trotter but has a great canter. My favorite thing about her is she has a lot of rhythm.”
World Champion Titles Won
Several World Show classes saw champions named on Sunday as well.
Ricky Noiseux showed KM My Girl for Sabrina Janis to win the Color Green Western Pleasure. The four year old mare known as Lollipop is by RL Best Of Sudden. “We bought her at the Big A last year,” Ricky said. “She’s beautiful, and a lot of kick for a little horse. She is very soft and steady and has a great top line. I’m really pleased with her.”
Sabrina is excited about the future with Lollipop. “We have some plans that include me getting to show her in some Non-Pro classes,” Sabrina said.
Some familiar faces were named champions in the Maturity Open Western Pleasure when Aaron Moses guided Moonrageous to the win for Starland Ranch LLC. “This was such a tough class,” Aaron said. “It’s an honor to be successful in this pen of horses because it’s a collection of some of the most successful horses over the past few years. In the whole class there wasn’t a bad horse there.”
Aaron doesn’t often pick favorites but he does enjoy ‘Spider.’ “He’s the one I can count on, because he’s always so consistent,” he said.
With a very successful show gelding, Aaron noted that he chooses classes carefully. “He’s been showing for a while now, and so we limit him to a few classes,” he said. “There are probably eight to ten classes he could show in, and we do two or three. We work to keep him happy doing his job and comfortable.”
In the Maturity Intermediate Open Western Pleasure, No Doubting Me and Chad Piper teamed up for the world title. They showed for NoNo’s new owner, Cynthia Kaufman. “We bought him at the end of March,” Chad said.
“Of course we’ve watched him in the barn since he was two with my brother-in-law, Brian Baker, but it’s been great to have him. He’s honest, fun and easy to prepare, and he loves to show. Cynthia will be showing him in Non-Pro, Limited and Select Amateur Western Pleasure.”
Susan Roberts and Sure Am Southern took the world championship in Amateur 50 & Over Western Pleasure. The class proved deep and popular, taking two splits and a final to determine the champion. “This win means a lot to me,” Susan said. “With a new horse this year, we’ve worked at it.
“We just got Calvin at the March To The Arch. I had watched Marlee White show him since he was young, and I liked him and Andy liked him, so when he came up for sale we tried him and bought him. He reminds me a lot of Only A Breeze, my show mare, and he feels and shows a lot like her.”
Another horse that changed hands and continued with success was KM You Make It Easy, whom Rusty Green showed to the world title in the Three Year Old Open Western Pleasure. Known as Phoebe, the mare is by The Lopin Machine and out of KM Suddenly So Easy.
“We bought her from Dennis and Debbie Martin and the Hornicks,” Rusty said. “Karen Hornick did a great job starting her, and when the opportunity to buy her came up, we jumped on it for John McNichol."
“ Her movement is just the textbook of what a pleasure horse should look like. She’s beautiful, natural and flowing. You couldn’t ask a horse to do more. She’s that special once in a lifetime horse, and John is excited to show her in Select Amateur classes next year,” added Katie Green
In the Three Year Old Intermediate Open Western Pleasure, Wet N Wild, shown by Wade Black for Cheryl Mullikin, took the world champion title. “We bought him in January in Venice,” Wade said.
“He’s by Machine Made and out of an RL Best Of Sudden mare. He’s just so good legged. We had a pretty full pen, so I just pulled him off the rail and let him show, and it worked.”
In the Three Year Old Novice Horse Hunter Under Saddle, Sara Simons piloted All Silver Linings to win a world championship title for owner Janis Semmelmayer. “Chuck Briggs raised him, and he’s by Allocate Your Assets and out of A Walk In The Sky,” Sara said.
“We bought him as a yearling and didn’t show him as a two year old, and brought him along slowly. What I like about him is that he canters so nicely both directions and has a great top line. He showed amazingly. I will be showing him in the Open and Green classes.”
Lisa Ligon showed Al Be Good To Go to win the world championship in Two Year Old Open Hunter Under Saddle for owner Jesslyn Besardi. The gelding known as Rocco is by Good Better Best. “He’s very sweet and kind, and super trainable,” Lisa said of the gelding.
“He makes me look good. He’s very elegant, profiles beautifully and is the total package for a hunter.”
