Just North of Orlando, where dreams come true in the House of the Mouse, is another magical place where dreams came true for two exhibitors and owners during the A Sudden Impulse Futurity’s Maiden Three Year Old Hunter Under Saddle and Western Pleasure classes on Saturday.

Cody Parrish and Kona Sweep Maiden Western Pleasure

“This is what we’ve dreamed of ever since this horse was a weanling,” said Cody Parrish after winning the Open division of the Maiden Three Year Old Western Pleasure Futurity aboard Fiire N Ice, who is known as Kona.

“After the Congress was cancelled and we first heard about this show, we knew this was where we wanted to show him, and we worked on it every day ever since.”

The flashy sorrel stallion, who is by Machine Made and out of Diamonds R Best, a daughter of RL Best Of Sudden, swept both the Limited and Open divisions of the class, earning more than $36,500 in all. In Saturday’s Open class, Cody and Kona stood atop the class on three of the judge’s cards and reserve on another.

“Nothing bothered him, and in fact he acted like he loved showing under the lights and in front of the crowd tonight,” Cody said. “I couldn’t ask for more of him. We will have a hard time topping this.”

2-    The Cooki Monster, Andy Cochran for Capital Quarter Horses LLC, $14,215

Dawn Baker and Teddy Win Maiden Hunter Under Saddle

Dawn Baker made a statement not only with her show partner’s name in the Maiden Three Year Old Open Hunter Under Saddle, but also in the placings in the class. She showed Only Ride The Best to win the Open division of the class for owner Caroline Cavallo, earning $3,566.40 for the win.

“He’s really cool,” Dawn said of ‘Teddy.’ “We bought him from Duane and Amber Pickard last year, and they put a great start on him. He’s so good minded, and that’s one of the things I like about him. He takes everything in stride and nothing phased him even having never been showing before.” The gelding is by Good Better Best and out of the mare Blazing Her Way.

Like Cody, Dawn planned to debut her horse for the A Sudden Impulse Futurity after the cancellation of the 2020 All American Quarter Horse Congress. “We saved him for this class after we heard about it,” she said.

“He has such a natural rhythm that you just basically let him show,” Dawn added. “We will continue to show in the three year old events this year, and Caroline will also show him in the Three Year Old Non-Pro classes.

1-    Only Ride The Best, Dawn Baker for Caroline Cavallo, $3,566.40
2-    Hubbout Another, Beth Case for Doreen Moore, $2,452
3-    Rockstar Status, Amber Pickard for Starland Ranch LLC, $2,118
4-    Jus That Cool, Judy Zeitler for Christine Hexter, $1,114
5-    Last One Matters, Farley McLendon for Holly Taylor, $1,003
6-    Glamourgirls Only, Alyse Roberts for Ulrike Klotz, $891

Maturity Limited Open Western Pleasure

Ashley Dunbar-Clock hit the jackpot in the Maturity Limited Open Western Pleasure with Cynthia Carden’s gelding, Hitt The Jackpot, earning $1,929 for the win.

“We bought him as a three year old, and he’s been with Sara Simons for the past two years. We just got him at High Point after the 2020 AQHA World Show,” Ashley said. “He was really good for me today. I was able to put him where I needed and it worked out well.”

Ashley shows the gelding in Trail and Western Riding as well as Western Pleasure, and his owner also shows him in Select Amateur classes.

Help From Friends In The Youth Classes

Logan Starnes not only enjoys showing with his friends in Youth Western Pleasure 13 & Under, but he found out on Saturday that his friends have his back when he needs a little help.

“One of my reins fell off my saddle in the line-up, and my friend Jackson got off his horse and got it for me,” laughed Logan. The judges were still impressed with Logan’s go in the class aboard Certainly Flatlined, and the duo earned first place, earning $2,233.20 for the win in the class, which featured $7,500 in added money.

“Besides Jackson, I show with Riley and Aden too,” Logan said. “We plan to show at the Big A, the AQHA Youth World Show, the NSBA World Show and the Congress, and I’m really looking forward to coming back to Ocala in September.”

Cheyenne Augsburger and Made No Regrets earned their second futurity class win of the week in Youth Hunter Under Saddle 14-18. The $10,000 added class paid $3,540 for first place.

“We just added Hunter Under Saddle in January, so this is really exciting to be able to win this class,” Cheyenne said. “He was really consistent. He has a really soft way of going that is floaty, and he has a really good top line. He is so much fun to show.”

The duo also won the Non-Pro Trail earlier in the week. “We’ve started doing Horsemanship and Equitation, and we’ll start adding a lead change soon,” she said. “We will keep working on perfecting Trail and Hunter Under Saddle too.”

Nancy Ditty and Pumpernickle Win Maturity Non-Pro Western Pleasure

A familiar team stood at the top of the judges’ cards in the Maturity Non-Pro Western Pleasure when Nancy Wilkerson-Ditty and Forever Kool, known as Pumpernickle, won the class. They earned $2,111 for the first place finish.

Nancy and her family raised Pumpernickle, and they two have been show partners ever since ‘Pumpy’ was a yearling in Longe Line. “She’s the most honest horse I’ve ever shown,” Nancy said. “Honestly, I just try to stay out of her way and let her show.”

Nancy admitted that showing in her hometown brought some additional nerves. “I did feel like there was more pressure to do well here, because I had family and friends here who don’t normally watch me show,” she said.

The A Sudden Impulse Futurity paid out more than $360,000 in added money throughout its eight-day schedule. NSBA Futurity events will return to the World Equestrian Center-Ocala on September 29, when exhibitors will vie for an estimated $1.6 million purse at The Championship Show.
