The final Saturday of the NSBA World Championship Show saw action in all four arenas on the Ford Truck Livestock Complex at Expo Square in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
In the Ford Truck Arena, that action included a number of World Show and Breeders Championship Futurity classes throughout the day. While there were several repeat champions from earlier in the show, several new champions were crowned as well.
On Cloud Nine
Mandie Berryhill piloted Real Souther Assets to win the world championship in the Three Year Old Limited Open Hunter Under Saddle for owner Kristen Galyean.
“Beth Case trained Cash as a two year old, and when Kristen bought him for her daughter Gracelyn, it was when I was pregnant with my daughter so she kept on training him. I was really grateful to get to show the Limited Three Year Old class with him,” Mandie said.
“I was a little nervous because there were a lot of horses out there, but he’s really handy so I was able to guide him through the traffic. He went in and trotted good. I wasn’t used to going that fast, but Beth kept telling me to speed up so we did. He has great self carriage, and such a flat trot – he has a big stride in a little body.”
It was Mandie’s first NSBA world championship. “I can’t believe it and I’m on Cloud Nine!” she said.
The Best Christmas Gift
Kim Lindsey got a Christmas gift from her husband Tim in 2022 that she will forever be grateful for when she received Im Always Sleepy, who led her to her first NSBA world championship in the Novice Amateur 50 & Over Hunter Under Saddle.
“Well I just started working with Shrek after Christmas,” Kim said of the Too Sleepy To Zip gelding. “He is five years old, and he’s the best Christmas gift ever. He’s the kindest horse – I just can’t even explain how nice he is. And he’s so consistent, and I think he showed that in our class today.
“I also have the best barn family with Arturo Maestas and Jesse Jones. They are so supportive and make it fun. It’s just amazing.”
Kim owned a horse that won an NSBA world title with an Open rider in the past, but it was her first world title that she earned on her own.
God, This Horse and Bret Parrish
Lisa Thomaier bought Cool Like Thaat, the mare she calls her unicorn, from Bret and Candy Parrish when the filly was three months old.
“This has a been a long time in the making,” she said. “It’s been an emotional journey. Every ride has been better, and this ride in the Color Green Western Pleasure was the best one yet. We’ve shown in five classes here at the NSBA World Show, and we have two world championships, two reserve championship and two bronze championships.
Bret and Candy raised Scarlett, and they are family to me,” Lisa added. “We’ve had several people ask to buy her, but she’s not for sale. She’ll have a forever home with me. She showed at a few shows earlier this year, but she wasn’t quite ready, and she just peaked at the right time.
“I’m as happy for Bret as I am for us. All I can say is dreams come true. God is great. It’s because of Him, this horse, and Bret Parrish!”
New Horse, No Problem For Meaghan Pye
Meaghan Pye showed a horse that she had only met after arriving at the NSBA World Show to win the Color Amateur Hunter Saddle, but it didn’t phase her or her new show partner, All The Girls Dig Me.
“Keith Miller called me from the APHA World Show and told me that I needed to buy this horse,” she said of the APHA gelding by All Time Fancy.
“Honestly I bought him without ever seeing him but he’s great. I showed up here at the NSBA World Show and said ‘hi, I’m your mom,’ and off we went. Roman is like a big dog. He’s 17.1 but he is very slow legged. He lopes so softly. He’s so fun to show.”
Meaghan was also busy showing her All Around horse Dont Think Twice this week, but she hasn’t been in the Hunter Under Saddle pen for a while. “I haven’t won a world championship since I showed Pax (Sleepin) in 2016. I got married last year, and we’re building a house, so I’ve been doing adult things and life has been happening. But it’s fun to be back,” she said.
There’s No Forgetting Zuidema’s Forgot My Password
Jamie Zuidema showed up at this year’s NSBA World Championship Show and won not only a world championship, but also a Breeders Championship Futurity title with his gelding, Forgot My Password.
“I saw Bill and Dillon Hatten riding this horse around in Saint Louis, and my wife and I decided to buy him,” Jamie said.
“He’s just pretty, and he’s such a great jogger. He’s by Gone Viral and out of a Machine Made mare, and Bill and Dillon had him all tuned up. It was a good go all around. I was pushing the whole time, and that’s always good.”
The purchase brought Jamie his first NSBA world championship and BCF championship wins. “I had won at the Congress before, but never won here, so that was kind of fun to do,” he said.
Jamie and his wife Anna hope to show ‘Possum’ at upcoming shows unless they sell the gelding.
A Smart Class For 'Smarty' and Kasey Wyse
Kasey Wyse showed DW Sudden Invitation to win the $2,500 Limited Horse/$2,500 Limited Rider Western Pleasure in the nightcap class at the Ford Truck Arena on Saturday.
Kasey, who comes from Australia, has spent much of this year working for Simons Show Horses. “I was here working in 2019, then I went home for three years and got to come back in February,” Kasey said. “It’s been great working at Simons Show Horses, and I get to keep helping them through this year’s Congress before I have to go back home. The barn family is so supportive, and Sara is one of my idols and it’s great to get to work for her,” she said.
“Smarty is a seven year old Quarter Horse gelding, and he’s by RL Best Of Sudden. Ali Hays was kind enough to let me show him. I’d had a few rides on him, but Sara had all the buttons there for me and he was fun to show. It’s very exciting to win my first world championship!”
“Kasey is an extremely hard worker, and she’s such a sweet person,” Sara said. “She has this amazing attention to detail and sharp eyes – she’s a great representative of our next generation of horsemen. We’re excited for her to win this class.”
