The NSBA Foundation held its second annual donkey races fundraiser at the Tom Powers Triple Challenge Futurity on Thursday night, which saw many thrills and spills on the way to raising money for the NSBA Crisis Fund.

The races took place after the day’s show classes.

Eight intrepid teams were auctioned off Calcutta style, including the Saul Sliss team, the Brooke Ganzow team, the Taft Dickerson team, the Gil Galyean team, the Shawn Knowles team, the Tom Forehand team, the Chad Sandavol team and the Wayne Davis team. Proceeds from the auction were split 50/50 between the Crisis Fund and the high bidders on the first and fourth place teams.

The high selling team was the Tom Forehand team, which brought $3,000 (shown at left). The total raised through the auction was $8,575, of which $4,287 was given to the Crisis Fund. The remaining $4,287 was split between the first and fourth place team bidders, with $2,572 and $1,715 presented respectively.

For the second year in a row, the Gil Galyean team won the finals (pictured at right). “We had a really good team, but we also had good luck,” noted Adam Mathis, who along with Denton DeBuhr, Aaron Moses and Denny Jones made up the team along with Gil Galyean. The team was purchased by Richard and Betty Jo Carr in the Calcutta Auction.

Thanks to all the trainers and exhibitors who participated in the races, as well as all the bidders who helped raise funds during the Calcutta auction.
