There was no doubt who knocked it out in the NSBA Three Year Old Open Western Pleasure at the Madness on Thursday – Katy Jo Zuidema and Knockin It Out stood at the front of the line under each of the cards of judges Andrea Simons, Sara Simons and Jon Barry. They earned $1,264.00 for the win.
Katy Jo showed the mare, known as Pipa, in the class of 13 horses. “She’s owned by the Fredericks, and she is by No Doubt Im Lazy and she is the last baby by the great mare Zippin The Breeze,” Katy Jo said.
“We started her last year and just brought her along slowly. She was a little bit of a challenge, and I think some of those horses like that end up being the best horses in the end. She was worth the wait. The Fredericks raised her and are so proud of her. They are great owners, and they’ve been in the business a long time. We love having them in our barn.”
Katy Jo talked about the mare, and showing in the three year old class. “This is really the first time I’ve had a three year old to show all year,” she said. “We usually show them as two year olds and sell them, so I haven’t got to show this class before. I’m really enjoying it.
“Pipa is all girl and she can be kind of sassy, but she’s worth it. I just try to keep her happy. She has such a natural, easy way of going, and nothing is forced with her. It’s so easy for her. I think for the judges, she’s pleasant to watch, and she’s the epitome of what a horse should do in this class.”

Katy Jo and Pipa have been accumulating wins over the past few months. The duo won the Kim Rich Memorial Western Pleasure at the Georgia On My Mind circuit in April, earning $3,811 for the Fredericks, and also took reserve in the Premier Sires Three Year Old Open Western Pleasure at March To The Arch, adding another $810 to the mare’s earnings. Stephanie Armellini also piloted Pipa to reserve in the Premier Sires Three Year Old Limited Horse Limited Rider Western Pleasure at March To The Arch, earning another $6,250.
“She’s a very good jogger and a very good loper. Usually a horse has one good gait or looks better one way than the other – but she has no holes,” Katy Jo said.
Pipa will campaign in Three Year Old Open Western Pleasure as well as Novice Horse classes this year.

Whoose On First and Jay Starnes took fifth place.
