The Virginia Maiden, held at the Spring Breakout AQHA Show in Lexington, Virginia, featured a payout of more than $40,200 to exhibitors and paid out to ten placings in the class on Friday evening. The day paid out a total of more than $51,000 in added money classes, which also jackpotted the entry fees.
Kelby and Ella Win Virginia Maiden
Kelby Hutchinson piloted Hot Dayum to win the class for owner Tali Terlizzi, earning a $10,053.52 paycheck.
“This is a four year old mare by One Hot Krymsun,” Kelby said. “We purchased her when she was two from Jeff Long. Jeff bought her through the Penn State Sale. We had full intentions of showing her here in this class last year, but she got sick, so we spent a year rehabbing her and finally got to debut her here tonight.
“We call her Ella. She’s a good horse, she tries. She’s a different style than a lot of horses, but she’s beautiful and has a lot of expression. She comes to work every day with an ethic. We’re going to show the Novice Horse events with her this year, and the plan is to get Tali on her back showing as well in the Non-Pro.”

Alan Fisher, showing Thatswhatbiggirlsdo for his wife, Shannon Fisher, earned the Limited Rider Bonus of $1,000, as well as a CP Western saddle.
Tops For Tali and Black N Bleu
The 2024 Spring Breakout Show has been the show for Tali Terlizzi. In addition to her first and second place horses in the Three Year Old and Older Limited Horse Hunter Under Saddle on Wednesday, and the Virginia Maiden champion, she added Three Year Old Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle champion with her horse, Black N Bleu.
“This is the first time I’ve got to show Ace since we showed at the Congress as a two year old,” Tali said. “We did this as a practice run and then we’re heading down to the A Sudden Impulse in Ocala next. He was good today. He’s really natural moving. He’s very good through his shoulders, he can trot, he can lope, and he has a good expression about him. Plus he’s pretty.
“We’re super excited with him because he’s the first one we’ve raised. He’s by The Born Legacy and out of Makin The Boys Bleu, who is the dam of Al Be Bleu. I’m excited to for the year in the Non-Pro Three Year Old Hunter Under Saddle classes and with Allison McDonald in the Open Three Year Old events.
“I now own Makin The Boys Bleu, so I have a couple more coming up, and I’m excited about that too.”
Gracie Robertson and Cam Become First Time Non-Pro Maturity Champions
Gracie Robertson won her first NSBA futurity with her horse, Good As Ever, in the Maturity Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle. “’This is actually my first time showing in this class. It feels pretty good to have earned a futurity championship, Gracie said. “Cam’ is five this year and he’s by Give Me The Goods and out of The Next Hello. I’ve had him for almost two years now.
“He’s got many personalities, but when he’s sweet, he’s really sweet. He’s a fun ride. We show Hunter Under Saddle now but I’m hoping to add the Hunter Hack later. We show at the Congress, NSBA World Championship Show, Martinganza and a lot of local shows in the Winston Salem area.”
When asked about the Spring Breakout and Virginia Maiden, Gracie said “This show has always been super fun, and we always come here. They always have exhibitor dinners that a lot of shows don’t do, and the money classes are always fun and everyone gets a check. I love Cameron and Meghan, and they do a great job with the show.”
Karen Johnson And SG Valentine Win Non-Pro Working Western Rail
Karen Johnson and her six year old gelding SG Valentine won the NSBA Non-Pro Working Western Rail, capping a weekend that has included winning a trophy saddle and $1,000 as the highest placing Non-Pro in the Open Maiden Western Working Rail, the Open Non-Pro Derby and a $738.08 check, and now the Non-Pro Western Working Rail and a check for $2,133.30.
“He’s by SG Frozen Enterprize and out of an own daughter of Shining Spark. He’s six, and I’ve had him for a year. It took about a year to get him pretty solid. His barn name is Willy Wonka. I just like the fact that he’s not spooky in arenas, he’s very trainable. In the class today, he hung in there. He’s going to be fun. I’m really looking forward to the fall shows with him.
“I won the Non-Pro saddle on A Brown Eyed Girl, and it was the first time she had been shown in the Maiden Western Working Rail class. She is by Heavy Duty Chex. I really think that eventually she could replace my bay gelding if we get it all put together. I really like her.”
The Spring Breakout show concludes on Saturday with Western Riding, Horsemanship, Western Pleasure, Ranch Trail and Ranch Riding classes as well as the last added money classes, the $1,000 Added Three Year Old Non-Pro Western Pleasure and the $1,000 Added Maturity Non-Pro Western Pleasure.
