With four arenas featuring everything from Performance Halter, Showmanship and Longe Line to Trail, Western Riding, Pleasure Driving, Hunter Under Saddle and Western Riding, NSBA staff, spectators and exhibitors kept a brisk pace all day long at the 2019 NSBA World Championship Show..
First Time Drivers
For the very first time, the NSBA World Championship Show offered two Pleasure Driving classes, and both saw huge numbers. There were 15 drivers in the Open Pleasure Driving, and exhibitors remarked that they could not remember the last time their class was that large.
Kevin Dukes drove Al Wayz On Your Mind to the win for owner Gerri Leigh Pratt. It was the second world championship for ‘Memphis’ who also won Junior Hunter Hack with Linda Crothers in the irons on Sunday.
In only her fourth time ever to show the class, Jenna Tolson showed Thefairestofthemall to win Amateur Pleasure Driving. “She’s really quiet, and we had been doing Hunter Under Saddle. She was getting bored with that, so we wanted something different to do so we tried it,” Jenna said. “I think we were the only APHA horse in the Amateur class. I’m really happy that NSBA added Pleasure Driving to the show.
Jenna’s mare, known as Scarlett, is by All Time Fancy and out of Dancin In The Truck. She is a past APHA champion.

First BCF Champions
Monday saw the first payouts in the 2019 NSBA Breeders Championship Futurity program.
Hubbout A Dance started and ended the day with a world championship. Owner Madison Nirenstein guided him to win the Breeders Championship Futurity Four to Six Year Old Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle, while Beth Case showed him to win the Maturity Open Hunter Under Saddle.
“I bought him at the AQHA World Show last year,” Madison said. “I was looking for a horse, and I loved the way he goes. He’s so smooth and consistent. I was in the barn with Alicia Porter, and I knew that he was like a big dog and a real sweetheart. He knows when to put his game face on, though!”

One of several world titles won by Aaron Moses throughout the day was the Color Breeders Championship Futurity Three to Six Year Old Open Western Pleasure, which he won showing Lope With Grace for owner Susan Juroe. Aaron won the Three Year Old Novice Horse world title on Snap It Send It for Kent Ray Taylor.
Aaron also rode Not Just An Illusion for owner Perry Jackson to win the Maturity $10,000 Limited Horse Open Western Pleasure. “I just love this horse,” Perry said. “We’re having so much fun with him and we’ve done pretty well this year. It’s been great and Aaron does the best job with him.”
To round out his day, Aaron piloted Its A Pretty Thing to win Junior Western Pleasure for Giorgia Medows. “I love this horse,” Aaron said of the five year old mare.
“She had some time off when she got hurt, but she’s been back to work for about a year. I think we started showing her again at the March To The Arch in Memphis, so she’s back. She was really good in the class. She let me put her where I wanted, and she responded really well.”
Jay Starnes earned his first BCF title for 2019 with Never Have I Ever, showing for Nakita Anderle to win the Color Breeders Championship Futurity Two Year Old Open Western Pleasure.
“This mare is by No Doubt Im Lazy and out of A Certain Illusion, so she’s got great bloodlines,” Jay said. “I showed her mother, and this one moves a lot like her. She’s very easy and very sweet.”

World Champions
Several world champions were crowned in a variety of classes throughout the day.
Dawn Baker showed Mito Been Me to win Junior Hunter Under Saddle, showing for Janae Walker. “She’s five years old now, and she loves to show,” Dawn said.
“She’s not your typical mare. She’s easy, and she’s the same every day. She’s so big, but she has such an even cadence and a beautiful profile. We love her!”

Beth Case teamed up with a long-time partner, Willy Has Potential, to win Senior Hunter Under Saddle for owner Shelby Ratliff. “I have a lot of horses that I like, but Willy will always be my favorite,” Beth said. “I’ve just always loved him.”
Al My Assets took Beth to another world show title on Monday, riding for owners Jud and Gail Heflin. “We call him Ivan. I had always loved him, and I actually bought him at three days old and had him at my house until the Heflins bought him. He lived in my back yard and would nicker at me every time I went out there. He’s a big pet. He was a May baby and he had some time off over the winter so he got a little behind, but he’s got a great look to him.”
Beth also teamed up with another familiar mount to win the Breeders Championship Futurity Four To Six Year Old Open Hunter Under Saddle with Couture Blue Genes, showing for Debbie Hodde. Couture Blue Genes was awarded NSBA’s prestigious 2018 Horse of the Year title at the NSBA Honors banquet on Sunday night.

Keith Miller rode Especially Lazy to two world championships. The duo won the Color Three Year Old Hunter Under Saddle as well as Color Green Hunter Under Saddle, riding for owner Ella Storch.
“I catch ride for Jeffrey Gibbs on occasion, and his team always has the horses really well prepared,” Keith said. “This horse always has his neck looking good and his ears up. He trots great and canters great.
Marilyn Masterson gave herself and her husband Ken the perfect anniversary gift to celebrate their 19th anniversary by winning Amateur 50 & Over Western Pleasure with KM We Know Shes Hot. “Well 19 years ago, we were married with our stallion Zippos Sheik as our best man, and then we got on a plan to go to California for our honeymoon,” Marilyn said. Both Ken and Marilyn agreed it’s been the best 19 years of their lives.
“Mercedes felt great today. She was trying her best, and there were a lot of tough horses out there.” The seven year old mare by their stallion RL Best Of Sudden has produced two babies, a stud colt and a filly by Machine Made. “We’re not selling them,” Marilyn was quick to say. “We just hope they move like her, but she really stamps them.”

Kent Ray Taylor returned to the Hunter Under Saddle pen after not showing in an English saddle for 32 years, but he made it worthwhile by winning the Color Amateur 50 & Over Hunter Under Saddle aboard All Good. The duo did so by unanimous decision of judges Tony Burris, Bret Clark, John Kunkle and Brent Tincher.
“Jason Martin told me to buy him, so I did,” Kent said. “Beth had won everything with him, and he was just really good. This was my first time to show him other than just riding around.”

Katy Jo Zuidema showed Knockin It Out to win Green Western Pleasure for owner Kathryn Frederick. “I think this is the first time we’ve flat-out won an NSBA world championship,” noted Kathryn.
“We’ve tied to win and lost the tiebreaker, and been reserve champion before, but this feels great. It seems like the more removed I get from them, the better they do. We have every confidence in Katy Jo and Tim, because they always have our horses so prepared. They are phenomenal trainers. This mare, Pippa, is one of the last foals out of our mare, Zippin The Breeze, so she’s special. She’s a princess.”

Dr. Kathleen Lennon has had a very busy World Show so far, and getting to show her horse was the least of her activities here. As a veterinarian, she has been busy working with client horses at the show, but she took time to show One N Only Krymsun to win a world championship in Novice Amateur Western Pleasure.
“This is my first time showing anything besides Hunter Under Saddle,” she said. “I rode with Heidi Piper for a number of years, and this is my first year with Judd and Jennfier Paul. This is my first world title, and it’s very exciting. He had a great feel, especially at the lope, and so it’s been fun.
“My horse, Madden, is by One Hot Krymsun, and he’s a 12 year old gelding. He is interested in everything. In fact he had a water bottle before we showed and got the cap off and we were worried he would try to swallow it.”

In the Three Year Old Novice Horse Hunter Under Saddle, Allison Clark McDonald was in the irons of Edited For Content, showing for Marlee Canfield. “We call him Amos, and he’s by These Irons Are Hot and out of a Skys Blue Boy mare,” she said.
“I love everything about him. He has a big personality, he’s beautiful and with this being just his second show, he’s handling everything really well.”

In the Color Amateur Hunter Under Saddle, Kelsey McArthur showed Sleepin In The Park to the world title. “Parker is a nine year old APHA solid and AQHA gelding,” Kelsey said.
“I really love that NSBA has added so many Color classes to the World Show. It definitely helped me make the decision to show here. I’ve noviced out of my classes, so being able to have two shots at the classes is really great.
“Parker was really awesome in our class. He was like ‘mom, I got you.’ He was a dream to ride.”
In the Performance Halter Mares, John Whitney showed Reissed In Red to her first world title. “We just started doing Performance Halter this past year. We’re having fun with it and she’s doing really well in it,” John noted.
“She’s really pretty and super balanced. She is by Repeated In Red and out of a full sister to Rewind And Repeat. I do Showmanship and my wife and I share her for Novice and Amateur Showmanship, and Horsemanship. She’s actually for sale because we like projects.”

In Equestrians With Disabilities Showmanship, Sara Grace showed Got My Dress Sox On to the world title. “This is my first World Show, and our first world title, and it’s very exciting,” Sara said.
“This is Ricky Bobby. He’s nine year’s old and I’ve only had him for three months. I’ve only been riding for four years, and I work with my trainer, Dawn Koffel. We were reserve champion in Trail yesterday, so after this week, we’re planning to go to the Congress.”

Rebecca Figeroa and Check Required backed and spun their way into the world championship in Color Youth Showmanship. “I love Showmanship and Trail,” Rebecca said. “Overall he was really good today. I’ve been working with Carly and Wade Parks for two years. I’m going to SMU to ride on the equestrian team, but I have another year left in youth.
In the Novice Youth Showmanship, Logan Gloude and Invitation To Boot won their first world championship. “I’ve had my horse for two years, and we do the All Around classes,” Logan said. “Our favorite part of the pattern was the back, and we really had to work on the trot around. He just always wants to be in my groom bag after we show.”.
Another first-time world champion was Katie Pidgeon and Sure Lazy Enough, winning the Novice Amateur Showmanship title. “My favorite part of the pattern was we got an instant set-up, and we usually don’t get that. The challenge was making a straight line and flowy circle,” she said.
“This is Ben, and I’ve had him for about two years. Showmanship is probably our favorite class.”

In the Trail pen, Lilian Chappell and Sleepinwithmybootson took the world championship in Color Youth Trail. “This is our first title this year, last year we won the Color Youth Western Pleasure,” Lilian said. “My favorite part of the pattern was our lope overs. She was very fluid and flowing. I was proud of her for that because she came in fresh this morning.”
Addisyn Albers and Lopin On A Goodbar were named world champions in Youth 13 & Under Trail. “I just came from the AQHA Youth World and got third there, and this is our first world title here,” Addisyn said. “This is Larry, and I’ve had him for about three years. We do Trail and Horsemanship. I think Larry likes the Trail the best.”
Seven year old Lilly Jones showed A Good Cookie to win the NSBA world championship in Walk Trot Western Pleasure. “My horse’s name is Ellie, and she likes mints,” Lilly said. “She’s a fast walker and a slow trotter. My trainers are Brad and Carli Pitts and they told me to pay attention, sit up and keep my chin up. My mom told me that If I win a world champion, I can get a hamster, but she wouldn’t tell Daddy until I won. I want a girl hamster that is a mixed color one, and I have a few names already picked out. I want to thank Brad and Carli and Katie (Bussing) who owns Ellie.r.
Alexandra Rippeon and Famous N Foolish won the Youth Walk Trot Horsemanship world championship. “This is my second NSBA world championship, since I won one last year,” Alexandra said.
“I thought it was a really fun pattern for the Horsemanship. Calvin is 12 years old and I just got him in March. We’ve only done five or six shows together. We will probably go to the pool to celebrate.”
