The National Snaffle Bit Association has announced that Zippos Tiger Bar has been named the recipient of the Legacy Award.

Foaled in 1989, Zippos Tiger Bar was bred and raised by Reynolds Inc., in Lexington, Nebraska. The gelding known as Butch was by the late Zippos Mr Good Bar and part of the stallion’s first foal crop. Originally purchased by the late Rodney Miller, Butch was then bought by Ann Admonius and sent to Troy Compton to begin his under saddle career.

In 1991, Troy Compton and Butch won the Two Year Old Western Pleasure at the Tom Powers Futurity in Berrien Springs, and the duo would go on to win the Tom Powers Triple Challenge after showing in Michigan, North Carolina and Florida. Zippos Tiger Bar became the first horse to grace the cover of The Way To Go in June of 1991. Troy and Butch would go on to win a world championship in Junior Western Pleasure at the 1992 AQHA World Championship Show when the gelding was a three year old.

Zippos Tiger Bar saw winning performances with Troy Compton, Ann Admonius, Joetta Bell, T. Joe Jeane and Aubrey Alderman. Eighteen years after the gelding won the Tom Powers Futurity in Berrien Springs, he took Aubrey Alderman to the winner’s circle in Walk Trot Western Pleasure at the same show, earning enthusiastic praise from the audience. Zippos Tiger Bar completed his show career in 2014 with Aubrey by placing 12th in Youth Hunt Seat Equitation at the AQHYA World Championship Show, when he was 25. Butch is retired on the family farm of Jim McKillips in Beloit, Wisconsin.

Zippos Tiger Bar would earn multiple Congress championships in Open and Youth Western Pleasure. Over the course of his 23-year show career, Butch earned 53.5 NSBA points, $16,178 in NSBA earnings, and 885 AQHA points in Open, Youth and Amateur classes, competing in eight different events.

The NSBA Legacy Award is presented to horses that have had an outstanding show career in Western Pleasure or Hunter Under Saddle events and proved to be forerunners of today’s example of the NSBA horse. Show records, earnings and titles over the span of the horse’s show career are considered. Horses must be foaled at least 25 years ago. To date, only three other horses have earned this prestigious award – Impressivell Do, Sonnys Black Gold and Zippos Dew Claw.

Zippos Tiger Bar will be recognized during the 2019 NSBA Honors awards on Sunday, August 11, held during the 2019 NSBA World Championship Show and Breeders Championship Futurity at the Built Ford Tough Livestock Complex in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
